Karnataka, the land of the Kannadigas, is one of the four southern states of India. Coming into existence in 1956 with the passage of the States Reorganization Act, it was originally named the State of Mysore until it was renamed Karnataka in 1973. The eighth largest state by area, Karnataka covers an area of 74,122 square miles (compared to the U.S. state of Washington at 71,303 square miles), or 5.83% of the total geographical area of India. Karnataka is the ninth largest state by population, boasting 61,130,704 peoples, according to the latest census conducted in early 2011. Kannada is Karnataka’s official language and the most widely spoken language in the state. Karnataka’s capital city, Bangalore (nicknamed the Garden City) is India’s “Silicon Valley” and, according to the 2011 census, has a population of 9.5 million people.
Today, Karnataka has an 83% Hindu population, 11% Muslim population, 4% Christian population, .87% Jain population, .73% Buddhist population. Karnataka is also the home of some of the forest dwelling tribals like the Soliga, Jeru Kuruba and Yerava tribes.
Though there are more than 400 Christian organizations in Bangalore, very few are focused on reaching the local Kannadigas. There are more Churches that hold services in English, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu than those holding services in Kannada.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ has been preached in Karnataka for over 100 years, but the “ground” has been very hard to penetrate. But the Word of the Lord has not been defeated! In most recent times, there has been an increase in the number of people accepting Christ as their Savior. With the major population being Hindu, there has been acceptance to the idea of Jesus as one of their many gods but when it comes to accepting Jesus as their ONLY Lord and Savior, the people are reluctant. But God has not forgotten nor has He given up. Instead, He has worked in the hearts of many over the years and now they have become witnesses for Him.
